Why proper dental care is important

For a healthy and beautiful smile, careful dental care is the be-all and end-all. Statistically, however, only 65 percent of people in Germany brush their teeth twice a day. Nevertheless, at least another 21 percent reach for their toothbrush once a day.

I don't have time in the morning, I don't have the opportunity at lunchtime, and I don't feel like it in the evening - these are the familiar excuses given by people who don't brush their teeth very often. Yet there is now plenty of scientific evidence that careful dental care is incredibly important.

Generally speaking, dental care is not about removing all bacteria from the mouth. That's not even possible, because the mouth is the natural habitat of numerous bacteria. However, if you neglect oral hygiene and do not brush your teeth at least twice a day as recommended, a stubborn film of bacteria forms on the surface of the teeth and in the spaces between them due to food residue. This causes both caries, a bacterial dental disease, and inflammation of the gums. The more bacteria you allow in your oral cavity through careless brushing, the more likely you are to develop tooth damage or gum disease.

Too many bacteria make you sick

In addition, when you have a bacterial overpopulation, the bacteria from your mouth can get into your bloodstream, increasing your risk of bacterial diseases or making existing diseases worse.

Studies show that oral bacteria can also affect the course of rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, kidney inflammation, strokes and endocarditis.

Poor dental hygiene can have truly dramatic consequences. Therefore, be sure to remove harmful bacteria again and again by brushing your teeth carefully. At least twice a day for two minutes is the official recommendation. However, if you get into the habit of brushing your teeth after every big meal, this will definitely benefit your oral hygiene. After all, new bacteria accumulate on the surface of the teeth just a few minutes after brushing.

Basically, however, it is not only the frequency of brushing that matters, but also the right technique and the right brush.

What's in favor of an electric toothbrush for your dental care

Although you can theoretically achieve just as good a brushing result with a conventional manual toothbrush as with an electric brush, purchasing an electric brush is recommended. The motor of the electric brush takes over a large part of the brushing work. Bacteria are reliably removed, cleaning errors are more likely to be forgiven.

You choose the brush head according to your individual needs. In the demirdental range you will find the standard models with hard, medium and soft bristles and also special designs with extra soft and extra hard bristles.

If you brush your teeth at least twice a day, you are doing a lot for your oral hygiene, but unfortunately this alone is not enough. After all, with a toothbrush you can't easily reach the spaces between the teeth, where food debris or particles from drinks also accumulate, thus promoting the growth of bacteria. The most effective way to clean the interdental spaces is to use dental floss or interdental brushes.

Round out your daily dental care with the use of an oral rinse. Although careful oral hygiene only takes a few minutes a day, many people unfortunately do not take this time.

This is a shame and a cause for concern. Take the time to practice thorough oral hygiene because just a few minutes will do a lot for your health and appearance.
